Both of my parents are former military, so Memorial Day has always served as an excellent re-orienter of priorities for my family. As we remember the sacrifices of so many who have fought and died for our country, we have the opportunity to celebrate the life and freedom available to us because of those sacrifices. And, honestly, just the chance to just be together as a family. After losing my sister to a heart condition almost twelve years ago, we cherish those moments even more.

And like any good Southern family, when we celebrate, we do it with food. While the rest of my family tend to be traditionalists when it comes to the Memorial Day cookout – hamburgers, hot dogs, coleslaw, potato salad, etc. – I do enjoy branching out.

I don’t know about you, but I feel that life is too short to eat the same exact things the same exact ways for years. Why have corn on the cob with butter and salt every year when you can try it with chili powder and lime juice one year? Why make a regular hamburger when you can make one that’s stuffed with cheese and bacon? Why not try something that’s altogether different, like shrimp kebabs?
